Q: WHAT IS ‘EXTREMISM’ ?

The Government has defined extremism in the Prevent strategy as: “vocal or active opposition to fundamental British values, including democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs. We also include in our definition of extremism calls for the death of members of our armed forces, whether in this country or overseas”.

Q: WHAT IS ‘CHANNEL’ ?

Channel is a programme which focuses on providing support at an early stage to people who are identified as being vulnerable to being drawn into terrorism.  The aims of Channel are to support and protect people who may be susceptible to radicalisation and ensure they have the resilience to resist all forms of violent extremism.  Channel is not about prosecuting or stigmatising individuals who have been referred.

Q: WHAT IS ‘WRAP’ ?

WRAP (Workshop to Raise Awareness of Prevent) is a (free of charge) specialist workshop designed by the Home Office and delivered by approved facilitators.  The workshop is an introduction to the Prevent strategy and an individual’s role in safeguarding vulnerable people.  It provides participants with:

> An understanding of the Prevent strategy and their role within it;

> The ability to use existing expertise and professional judgment to recognise potentially vulnerable individuals who may need support

> Knowledge of when, how and where to refer concerns about vulnerable individuals

Non-Lancashire colleagues in other areas of the country should e-mail: WRAP@homeoffice.x.gsi.gov.uk  for details of training available in their area.

Schools across the Lancashire region enquiring about booking places for their Headteacher, Designated Safeguarding Lead or Chair of Governors can find details in the Contact Us document below:

>> Download the Lancashire 'Contact Us' details for Lancashire Schools

Q: DOES MY SCHOOL NEED A 'PREVENT' POLICY ?

No.  The departmental advice issued by the DfE in June 2015 makes it clear that schools are not expected to have a dedicated 'Prevent Policy'.  However, schools should have clear procedures in place for protecting children at risk of radicalisation which may be set out in existing safeguarding policies.  Further information on expectations is available in the DfE departmental advice available in the 'Useful Information' section of P4S.

Q: I AM A SCHOOL OUTSIDE LANCASHIRE - CAN I USE THESE RESOURCES ?

Schools outside of the Lancashire region actively use the resources made available on P4S and regularly provide positive feedback .  The resources are intended to be as widely accessible as possible though a small number of resources may have limited access beyond the region.  Access to these is still possible though will be subject to the subscription or training requirements identified with the resource.

Q: HOW CAN I ASSESS MY SCHOOL'S 'PREVENT' PROVISION ?

Schools may already be addressing aspects of the revised Prevent Duty through existing practice but may not have made the corresponding links to those outlined in the 'Promoting fundamental British Values as part of SMSC in schools' guidance issued by the DfE in November 2014 (see the 'Useful Information' section on P4S).  A useful tool in auditing broader current provision is the Bradford Prevent Self Review Tool which can be accessed via the 'Other Recommended Resources'  section on P4S.

Q: WHY DO SOME OF THE RESOURCES ON P4S REQUIRE PASSWORD ACCESS ?

Whilst the vast majority of the resources on P4S are freely available for use and can be delivered by practitioners in school, some of the resources are provided by third parties (e.g. Where’s the Line?’) or require trained facilitators to deliver (e.g. Not in my Name).  Resources such as the SCARF Pack materials are offered on a chargeable basis to schools outside of the Lancashire region.

Both Where’s the Line? and the ‘SCARF2 pack’ resources are freely available to schools across the Lancashire, Blackpool and Blackburn with Darwen region using the contact details on the respective pages.

Q: I WOULD LIKE TO USE THE RESOURCES ON P4S BUT I'M NOT SURE WHERE TO START...

The Popular Resources section above contains a snapshot of resources currently being used on P4S.  This illustrates which resources are currently the most popular with schools using the P4S site along with some useful school leadership resources and guidance.
